VOLUNTEERS  FOR AMERICA CONCERT
OCTOBER 20, 2001, ATLANTA, GEORGIA  - OCTOBER 21, 2001, DALLAS, TEXAS

Volunteers For America was a benefit concert held on October 20, in Atlanta, Georgia and October 21, 2001 at the Smirnoff Music Center, Dallas, Texas. The concerts were held in tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks. STYX band members, Tommy Shaw, James Young along with others put the benefit concert together in a short period of time. The concert was in Atlanta Georgia on October 20, and moved overnight to Dallas, Texas for the October 21st show. Proceedes from the concerts went to the families of Fireman killed in the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

The concert was a who's who of Classic Rock beginning at 4pm and lasting well into the night, after 1am. Performances by Edgar Winter Group, Mark Farner, Jack Blades, John Waite, Eddie Money, Peter Frampton, Survivor, Kansas, Journey, STYX, REO Speedwagon, Bad Company, and others. Lynyrd Skynyrd performed only in Atlanta.

Each performer did a set usually amounting to about five or more songs apiece. Different from most concerts, Artist would play songs with members from different bands while the stage was being torn down then set up for the next band!

Rock To The Rescue - October 20, 2002

The Gund Arena in Cleveland, Ohio was the setting for the Rock to the Rescue charity concert on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002. The show benefited the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Educational Fund.

Organized by Tommy Shaw of STYX, the show began at 4:30pm and lasted until almost midnight. It showcased the talents of numerous performers, including John Waite, Jack Blades of Damn Yankees and Night Ranger, Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad, Eddie Money, Sam Moore of Sam and Dave, Survivor, and Edgar Winter among many others who I know I’m forgetting. The headlining acts were Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, STYX and our own Bad Company. The act that got the most response from the audience was, in my humble opinion, Bad Company! They started out with Joe Fabulous and played a limited set including Rock ‘n Roll Fantasy with the Beatles medley, Bad Company and All Right Now. Paul, Simon, Dave and Jaz rocked the house, and you could see a lot of the other performers standing by the side of the stage in complete awe of their performance. The entire audience was up, singing and dancing along to the music, and they stayed that way for Bad Company’s whole set.

2003

Cyclorama is the Xllll studio album, released on February 18, 2003.

This was the first studio album with Lawrence Gowan, following the departure of group co-founder Dennis DeYoung in 1999. It was also the latter of two albums to feature Glen Burtnik the former being 1990's Edge of the Century, and the only album released by the Lawrence Gowan/Tommy Shaw/James "JY" Young/Glen Burtnik/Chuck Panozzo/Todd Sucherman lineup, and as such the only original Styx album to feature four different singer-songwriters Shaw, Young, Gowan and Burtnik as opposed to the usual three. The album peaked significantly higher on the Billboard album charts than STYX's previous release, Brave New World 1999, ending up 48 slots higher at No. 127.

The album's first single was "Waiting for Our Time," which failed to chart on the Top 40 singles chart. It charted on the Mainstream Rock and Heritage Rock charts. "Yes I Can" charted on the American Music Adult Contemporary Chart. The album was also released as a "Dual Disc," with the reverse side of the disc containing a 5.1 DVD-Audio mix as well as music videos. The album was finally released to streaming services in 2020.

I used to like to walk the straight and narrow line
I used to think that everything was fine
Sometimes I'd like to sit and gaze for days through sleepless dreams
All alone and trapped in time
All alone and trapped in time

I wonder what tomorrow has in mind for me
Or am I even in it's mind at all
Perhaps I'll get a chance to look ahead and see
Soon as I find myself a crystal ball
Soon as I find myself a crystal ball

Tell me, tell me where I'm going
I don't know where I've been
Tell me, tell me, won't you tell me
And then tell me again
My heart is breaking, my body's aching
And I don't know where to go
So tell me, tell me, won't you tell me
I've just got to know

Crystal ball
There's so many things I need to know
Crystal ball
There's so many things I've got to know
Crystal ball
Won't you tell me please before I go
Crystal ball

Tell me, tell me where I'm going
I don't know where I've been
Tell me, tell me, won't you tell me
And then tell me again
My heart is breaking, my body's aching
And I don't know where to go
So tell me, tell me, won't you tell me
I've just got to know

Crystal ball
There's so many things I need to know
Crystal ball
There's so many things I've got to know
Crystal ball
Won't you tell me please before I go
Crystal ball
