2020

We are all in this together :)

Cellar’s Ken Sharp in our new feature interview with guitarist/songwriter
Tommy Shaw
and his band mates were not about to let the creeping discomfort and uncertainty of the pandemic negatively affect their songwriting:

“Well, it’s how we were all brought up. We were raised up with pretty positive influences in the family. My mother would always say, “Things are going to work out the darkest hours. It’s all going to work out.” I would always resist and go, “You don’t know that!,” but she was right. We generally fight our way out of whatever bad we’ve found ourselves in and come out into the sunlight and the fresh air. It’s almost like an old gospel thing, things might be dark today but it’s all going to be all right, you know, that optimistic view. And generally usually things always pretty much do work out. There may be some hardships getting there.
“So that’s just naturally how we write in STYX.
We never have and ending like, “we’re all gonna die!”

Crash of the Crown XVll studio album, released on June 18, 2021.

From April 30, 2021, through May 5, 2021, STYX posted artwork on social media that included a countdown in the corner that would eventually lead to the revealing of their new album, revealed on May 6, 2021. With the reveal, they released the album's title track on streaming platforms. The Prog Report reviewed the album saying it "stands as one of the very finest in their catalogue".

A new era of hope, survival, and prosperity comes calling on STYX's magnum opus, Crash of the Crown, the band's first studio album since The Mission in 2017. Though the 15-track album takes a hard look at some inherently dark subjects, the prevalent light at the end of the tunnel eventually becomes each song's focal point - a persistent fervor to keep moving forward and achieve the greater good.
Featuring "Crash of the Crown," "Reveries," and more.

In 2021, Will Evankovich produced and co-wrote the STYX album Crash Of The Crown and was officially announced as the seventh member of STYX by Tommy Shaw.

“To me, there is an arc to every artist’s career. First, you become known initially as a performer. And then you begin to establish yourself with new songs and new music. You may do a cover song here or there, but mostly you go with new material written by you or by others. That goes on for a while — and then you get signed.” — James “JY” Young
